The recently published book Over my Dead Body:Unearthing the Hidden History of American Cemeteries by Greg Melville has an interesting chapter on the Monticello African American Graveyard that complements this post on history we all need to learn about the enslaved., including at Monticello. Thank you for this post!

Such important information for us to be aware of, as so much of this history was swept under the rug until recently.

Thank you for sharing this. I know some of this about Monticello as I am a graduate of UVA. I appreciated to learn about the cooking of his enslaved chefs

Thank you for highlighting this truth. I have recently been reading the wonderful book The 1619 Project by Nicole Hanna Jones. Like this fact there is so much of the history of American history which is not taught in our schools. The more we can learn and attend to the true stories of our past the better chance we have of becoming the democracy we profess ourselves to be.

Thanks for all you do. I have been to Monticello a few times, but never looked at the way the slaves cooked. This is a great reminder.

As education becomes more and more threatened in the American school system, the importance of informative articles like this cannot be denied. Thank you for writing about this and allowing people a glimpse into the history of enslaved people, and perhaps delve into further research to learn more. We can never heal until we face our past and acknowledge it.
