We have two cold frames, so had fresh greens all winter. We did have to wind some heater tape around them to get through the worst of the cold. Now they’re full of chard, kale, arugula, other hearty greens. In the unsheltered garden we just planted tomatoes, peppers (sweet and hot), lots of herbs. We’ll have strawberries soon if the slugs and squirrels don’t get them first.

I gave up gardening years ago, I love farmers markets, I love meeting farmers and buying what they grow. I have become friends with some. I learn so much from them

I have been gardening since I was a child and it was not only a source of fresh food but a refuge and inspiration to plant seeds, nurture and water them as they grew . Picking and eating fresh fruits and vegetables right from the garden was so gratifying! I have taught my (now adult) children , their friends and now my 4 sweet grandchildren the joys of planting a garden and planting trees . They love going out to "pick dinner " ! I recently moved from the Midwest to Southern California so I have been learning what grows best here near the ocean and how the seasons differ but now I can garden pretty much all year with fresh herbs and greens and plant my favorite dwarf fig trees along with dwarf citrus . Everything is in large containers or on a Lettuce Grow hydroponic tower on my terrace so easy to monitor and harvest ! It is a daily joy !

Planting several varieties of tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes are the one garden item that I have never found an acceptable hothouse substitute when it’s out of season.
