Behind the Scenes in Toronto
A few of my favorite places while shooting Yes, Chef!
Hola people… Did you get a chance to watch Chef’s Table or Yes, Chef! yet? What do you think? I had so much fun making them both, for different reasons—I love Martha and it’s such a different concept for a cooking show! And I was so proud of Chef’s Table because it was a beautiful look at some of the places that made me who I am today. If you haven’t seen them yet, definitely add them to your “must watch” list!
Today, I am excited to give a little love to Toronto, where I filmed Yes, Chef! with Martha. We were of course very busy making the show, but I did get a chance to explore this beautiful city on the lake, and eat some amazing meals made by some of the most talented chefs in Canada. I think if you are reading through this list you will notice a little bit of a pattern, but what can I say? I love seafood, people!
Martha posted some really fun moments from the month…
Here were some of our favorites from our time there:
Shoushin
3328 Yonge St, Toronto, ON M4N 2M4, Canada

Shoushin is a true nigiri restaurant, and they already have one Michelin star…but I think they deserve two or three. There are a few amazing places for sushi in Toronto, but Shoushin is near the very top. I think it only gets better if you are actually in Japan. A beautiful restaurant, with great service (they are fully committed to the Japanese concept of omotenashi, the art of hospitality), and chef Jackie Lin takes ingredients that at their core are so fundamental, fish and rice, and transform them in the most incredible ways…and you will be transformed from eating his food.
Sunny’s Chinese
60 Kensington Ave Units 6-14, Toronto, ON M5T 2K1, Canada

There are great Chinese restaurants, and then there is Sunny’s, which is on another level. Sunny’s menu is organized around the senses…what you will feel and experience when you taste a dish, like the incredibly spicy orange chicken, or the “not too sweet” Blackbird french toast with black sesame jam and oolong condensed milk.
LSL
2066 Avenue Rd, North York, ON M5M 4A6, Canada

LSL is a creative intersection of three incredible chefs, each with their own unique experience and vision, coming together to show off the best of two world-class culinary traditions: France and Japan. The creativity is next level, the precision and execution are art, and the service is perfect. People, these guys are going places, and you’re gonna hear about them.
Fishman Lobster Clubhouse
RP23+QR Scarborough, Ontario, Canada

Ok, ok, ok, I know the name gives it away, but this is another amazing seafood restaurant, and also happens to be a Chinese restaurant. If you love piles of seafood and you love Chinese food, this is your spot! The stars of the restaurant are King Crab and lobster…but they also have some turf options as well that are absolutely delicious, like the beef tenderloin with black pepper sauce.
Oroshi Fishco
962 College St, Toronto, ON M6H 1A5, Canada
Of course I don’t just like to go out to restaurants…sometimes I like to cook too! I was so happy to hear about Oroshi Fishco, a dry-aged sushi spot in the West End, and when I found out about them, I had to get my hands on that incredible fish! As you might know, we are working with some dry-aged fish at Bazaar Mar in Las Vegas, and while it’s not a totally new concept, it’s something not a lot of people know about yet…but it is one of the best ways to show off a fish, because it removes the moisture and leaves nothing but buttery, flaky texture and flavor. So imagine that…as sushi? Are you hungry yet?
Tell me: where in Toronto do you like to go? And of course … watch Yes, Chef! to see why Martha and I spent so much time eating together in Toronto!
I would love it if you opened The Bazaar by Jose Andres in Toronto. So happens there is a location that became free when Blu Restaurant moved last month, on Avenue Road in Yorkville, a neighbourhood with some of the best restaurants, hotels and shopping in the city.
The show on Netflix was awesome.
You and Jamie.
Fab stories.
Oh.. sure wish I was in TO..up here on the west coast of Ontario.
Home of great craft beers and perch!
